FrameMaker and the Power of XML: XLST, XPath and more
Adobe Tech Comm recently hosted Alan Houser (@arh) as our guest expert to present a 3-part series on “FrameMaker and the Power of XML.” This blog covers highlights of the series, and provides links to the recorded webinars.
Sess 1) Approaches to EDD design
The FrameMaker Element Definition Document (EDD) provides a simpler option for formatting SGML and XML documents than the complex, arcane FOSI or XSL-FO.
In this recorded webinar, Adobe Certified FrameMaker Instructor Alan Houser highlights common approaches to EDD design, and demonstrates the rich capabilities of Adobe FrameMaker for generating PDF documents from XML. Houser showed the simple logic of the EDD syntax, and also showed how you can leverage other portions of an EDD to begin a new section.
In this recording, you will learn:
- The three major approaches to EDD design, how to use each, and when each is appropriate.
- How to use your existing unstructured FrameMaker template in your formatting rules.
- How to leverage document structure with context-dependent formatting rules.
- How to re-use formatting rules with format change lists.

Sess 2) Using FrameMaker XML Code View
Together, XSLT and XPath are the W3C-standard languages for manipulating XML documents.
In this webinar, Alan Houser provides a technical overview of these languages, demonstrating the new FrameMaker 11 support for these languages within the FrameMaker XML view, and provides examples of using XSLT and XPath within FrameMaker for searching and transforming XML documents.
This session shows you how to:
- How to use XPath to address specific locations in an XML document tree.
- How to use XSLT and XPath to convert common document structures to HTML.
- How to use XSLT and XPath to generate HTML tables of contents and resolve cross-references.
