Tom Watkins on Photoshop 25 Under 25

I was recently selected to take part in Adobe’s 25 Under 25 programme to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Photoshop. Alongside 25 other artists aged 25 or under, our work will be featured in a two week takeover of the @Photoshop Instagram account. My work was second in line to be featured, so the pressure was on!

The artwork I was commissioned to produce is abstract in nature, drawing on a combination of retro and futuristic themes, to celebrate Photoshop’s heritage as well as its future. It’s also full of movement, geometry and vivid gradiented colour, very typical of my style. Alongside the artwork I’ll also be featuring behind-the-scenes shots of me working, where I study Creative Advertising at Lincoln University, and a few other bits and bobs that make me, me.

For me, Photoshop is the king of design programs, it’s a powerhouse that can handle almost anything nowadays. Along with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop plays a key role in all my artwork – I still use other programs to do all my construction work, but Photoshop brings it all together, especially when it comes to colouring my work (which I agonise over, a lot).

All of my creations go straight onto my Behance portfolio, which has grown into an amazing platform to showcase work and I’m humbled by the overwhelming reception my projects have received. Although I can’t really say where my future lies, I’m currently illustrating a children’s book, while doing a bit of film work. Job wise, I’d ideally like to freelance for Google and Apple. Realistically, though, I want to work anywhere where I can be creative and help change the world for the better, as long as they have a table tennis table!
