Reviewing FrameMaker in “Total”; not just the new stuff

In the 3rd and final session of our 3-part series on FrameMaker with Tom Aldous, we received a complete overview of ALL of FrameMaker; not just new features. This dynamic sessions is mostly live demo and includes several “recipes” for using old and new features together to save time and money in production.

Minute Markers to Key Points in Presentation

Intro of Tom Aldous and his credentials

Polls on audience experience with products and optionally XML

Summary of topics to be covered – not that much of what is shown is “background info” … you do not have to work with Master Pages or Reference Pages on a monthly basis … much of what is shown in this session is how templates were set up (even “out-of-the-box”)

How Books works in FrameMaker

Illustration of possible Book Hierarchy, containing mixed content, even sub-books for VolumesDiscussion of how Generated lists (TOC, etc.) all have automatic hyperlinks in published output (PDF or ePUB formats) … observation that equivalent tool for “book” in MS Word still tends to be fragile

Book Numbering Schemes: you can have an alternate shorter books that has fewer chapters, made of documents that are included in longer books. On book level you can control how page numbering continues, restarts, etc. Appropriate numbering for book can be set up in the book.

Anatomy of a chapter file: how externally referenced graphics will dramatically reduce chapter file size.

Explanation of Text Insets: externally referenced text content file (in unstructured documents)

there are 3 main layers to a FrameMaker document: Master Pages, Reference Pages and Body Pages. Usage explained and illustrated – how custom art frames on Reference Pages can be used to bracket paragraph styles with special artwork

Overview of different Style Catalogs: Paragraph Styles / Character Styles / Table Styles / Object Styles / Cross-Reference Styles / Element Definitions (for XML structured documents)

WHAT’S IN A FRAME? = how the frame paradigm is used in FrameMaker … paginating columns are text frames which can be manipulated as objects – Discussion of “Flows” and pages, basis of pagination

Text Frame Properties

Anchored Frames – showing 7 possible anchored positions within and outside of columns

Columns & Sideheads

HIDDEN FRAMES on Master Pages

How Master Page Mapping has drastically reduced manual steps … the only place you should manually apply a Master Page is on first page of the document

Understanding FrameMaker Templates

Publishing to PDF and 5 different online formats, including Responsive HTML5

Structured Authoring: understanding nested content … SGML arrived in 1995, XML arrived in 1998. FrameMaker has advanced more swiftly in XML development than some more traditional competitors

FORMAT TAGS in unstructured docs

Working with non-XML, unstructured FM Book file – how to handle continued page numbers or “restart” page numbers … DEMO how to change chapter order via drag n’ drop …

View Master Page to see how document template info is controlling page layout … explore the MASTER PAGE MAPPING on Reference Page

Using Paragraph Style Catalog to change format styles on Body Page

Exploring Paragraph Designer which determines format values of paragraphs … Using [Pagination] tab of Paragraph Designer to save styles with “keep with next” paragraph

How to control Numbered Paragraph Prefix in template. Easy to learn. – How to control hyphenation. Setting format attributes associated with styles rather than as individual overrides.

Using Conditional Tags to product multiple versions of a book from a single set of source files

Publishing to PDF, to output entire book to convenient PDF format – explore the automatic hyperlinks in the published PDF

Using new File > Publish command to output to ePUB, HTML5 responsive and other online formats

GO TO LIVE SAMPLE JUST CREATED: <– case sensitive … notice that HTML will resize for your screen (laptop, tablet or smart phone)

Using Master Page Mapping to allow a specific paragraph tag to invoke a landscape page to make room for a wide table

How to Rotate a Master Page and have the text orientation be proper … e.g. HEADER/FOOTERS are sideways, but the text column is oriented like other pages

(Answering some questions)
