After finishing the Oceans Seven Challenge in 2014, you’d think Kim Chambers would have had enough of swimming. But she wasn’t done yet.

Kim, a communications manager at Adobe, recently became the first woman in the world to swim from California’s Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge. Even for an experienced extreme marathon swimmer, the 17 hour and 12 minute swim through freezing, shark-infested water tested Kim’s strength, and there were points when Kim felt she couldn’t carry on.

In an interview with KQED this morning, Kim said she still can’t believe she completed the swim. “I’m trying to process all of it. This was a major personal goal for me.” Even though Kim admitted she was scared and doubtful, her fear was trumped by her belief that “the rewards outweigh the risk.”

In fact, Kim encourages others to take a leap of faith, not just for having the pride of accomplishment, but because of the potential for growth. “Do something that might scare you, even just a little bit. Show people what is really possible.”
