Today Adobe announced a new Cloud Signature Consortium, comprised of leading industry and academic organizations committed to building a new open standard for cloud-based digital signatures across mobile and web – allowing anyone to digitally sign documents from anywhere.
The announcement aligns with a new European Union signature regulation (eIDAS) that will go into effect on July 1, 2016, helping pave the way for global adoption of secure digital signatures.
Adobe has a long history of supporting open standards, most notably by making the PDF specification open and available to all through ISO, and we’re aiming to follow that same path for cloud-based digital signatures. Today, most digital signature solutions are based on proprietary technology that limits the choice of trusted certificate providers. This prevents developers of mobile apps and other technologies from building tools that increase the reach of digital signatures across different platforms and applications.
This new open standard for cloud-based digital signatures will allow anyone to digitally sign documents from anywhere and on any device. It’s driving the industry forward by greatly improving the user experience and ultimately streamlining business.
