Watch The Game And See The Comments On One Screen
Twitter is about what’s happening and the conversation around it, said Jack Dorsey, chief executive of the online social networking service. Next step is life-streaming.
The future of Twitter is live events—news, sport, and entertainment—while continuing to make the platform both easier to use and easier for people to understand why they should use it.
That was the view of Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, in conversation with WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell on the second morning of the Dmexco Exposition and Conference in Cologne, Germany.
The discussion took place as Twitter was preparing to live-stream the NFL Thursday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets, the first of 10 NFL games that will live-stream on the platform at the same time as they’re shown by NBC and CBS.
“People have been tweeting about the NFL for 10 years; now you can watch the game and see all the conversation around it all on one screen,” Dorsey said.
He explained that this was part of Twitter’s strategic focus on live events.
“Live events are our sweet spot, and they’ve always been our sweet spot. Twitter has always been an amazing companion to live events,” he said. “Earlier this year, we said Twitter is about what’s happening and the conversation around it. We’re making a big investment in live-streaming because it’s a perfect complement to what we do. We’re enabling people to watch events with all the commentary in a place where we can add a lot of value.”
Asked by Sir Martin about other changes to come at Twitter, Dorsey said the company’s approach was “to simplify the service so that people can understand how to use it, and why they should use it. We’re really looking at our core and trying to make it better every day. And we’re investing in better technology so that advertisers can spend less time on the system and more time communicating with their customers.”
