Every sports fan grows up dreaming that one day they’ll score the winning goal in the big game. During the UEFA Champions League football competition, BT Sports challenged professionals and fans alike to live out their dreams by recreating some of the most interesting and iconic goals of recent Champions League history.
The Goals Recreated videos started when BT Sports sent video crews to football clubs across Europe with a challenge to current stars: four chances to recreate a famous goal. The short videos were hits with fans, which gave the company an idea: what if it invited everyday folks to take the same challenge? On the Goals Recreated stage at the fan festival in Cardiff, Wales before the Champions League final, fans signed up for four chances to score an iconic goal. Every fan got a video of their efforts to share on their social channels and the videos were also shared on the BT Sports YouTube channel.
There was just one problem: as the host broadcaster of the Champions League, every camera crew at BT Sports was already focused on the final. The company needed someone it could rely on to produce high-quality video, quickly and reliably. That’s where Ben Baldwin and Chuffed Productions stepped in.
Baldwin has a unique all-around understanding of the art of video production. Originally trained as an actor, Baldwin has worked in front of the screen as a presenter for Sky and ITV in the United Kingdom, as well as behind the scenes as a producer, cameraman, and editor. After several years of honing his talents in television, Baldwin started Chuffed Productions with the goal of providing broadcast quality video for businesses.
“Goals Recreated was a really interesting project, because it brought together broadcast, marketing, and social media,” says Baldwin. “Participants got really excited about the Champions League final. But social media touched even more people. Participants shared videos, engaging family and friends. And our Facebook Live broadcast earned nearly half a million views.”
Five cameras, filming simultaneously, recorded participants’ shots on goal. Behind the scenes, a team of four editors raced to edit the 300 participant videos using Adobe Premiere Pro CC.
“Adobe Premiere Pro CC is my go-to tool for video editing,” says Baldwin. “The ability to edit raw video, whether it’s 4K or a live stream, speeds up our production process and opens new doors to help us work more efficiently or add creative touches.”
But perhaps one of Baldwin’s top reasons for using an Adobe Premiere Pro CC workflow is its integration with other Adobe Creative Cloud apps. “In particular, I appreciate the integration with Adobe After Effects CC,” says Baldwin. “I like that I can just take the graphics and titles created in After Effects by a freelancer, or in this case BT Sports, and pull them into Premiere Pro without needing to be an After Effects expert.”
Flexible post-production model
When not helping fans realize their sports dreams, Chuffed Productions focuses on videos for businesses, from training and tutorials to testimonials and events. Using Adobe Creative Cloud, Baldwin collaborates with top freelancers for each project. Whether freelancers come in to the office or work remotely, Creative Cloud helps reduce barriers to sharing by keeping everyone on the same apps and versions.
“Our goal is broadcast quality video, but that can mean different things depending on the client and the project,” says Baldwin. “For me, it’s about how we shoot, edit, and polish a project to create something stunning for clients. Adobe Creative Cloud helps me be more flexible and use the creative people and workflows that fit the project the best.”
Ben Baldwin will be presenting in the Adobe stand at IBC 2017 on Sunday, September 17th at 4:00 PM (7:00 AM). His presentation on Monday, September 18th at 10:30 AM (1:30 AM PT) will be live streamed on the Adobe Premiere Pro Facebook page (@premierepro).
