What’s Next: New Features & Faster Workflows Coming to Auditon CC

The upcoming release of Adobe Audition CC is about CREATING TIME. Giving creators more time to work creatively, saving time from repetitive tasks, and working with time in new ways. Let me give you a brief look at what you’ll see later this year.

Auto-Ducking

One of the more time-consuming tasks editors face when mixing sound is ensuring the different elements of a timeline blend together well and don’t interfere with each other. Usually this means making sure the volume of background music is reduced slightly when dialogue or other important sound elements are present and most techniques to achieve this are slow and cumbersome. In the past, this might have required editors meticulously create keyframes on a clip volume envelope, rubber-banding passages up and down while listening closely to the dialogue. Other users might “ride the fader” on a hardware control surface, adjusting the track volume up and down, recording these motions as automation, as the timeline plays in real-time. Both methods are slow and any subsequent changes made to the dialogue clips must be manually adjusted on the automation envelope.

Enter Auto-Ducking in the Essential Sound panel. After assigning a clip as a Music type, the new Ducking option can quickly analyze dialogue, sound effects, ambience, other music, or even unassigned clips on the timeline, and automatically generate the volume automation to match. Simple parameters enable editors to control the amount of reduction, sensitivity, and even how quickly to fade the music in and out. And once activated, Audition keeps monitoring your timeline, updating the envelope as you add, delete, or move clips on your timeline.

Multitrack Clip Enhancements

Editors and producers recording voiceover and ADR will be pleased to learn about new features designed to make capturing, monitoring, and layering clips faster and easier than ever. Smart Monitoring ensures the relevant content on a track is audible at the time it’s needed, allowing talent to match cadence, diction, and timing or original recordings when performing punch-ins and corrections. Improvements to clip z-order behavior ensures clips stay on top, even if the background clip is selected. And new modifier keys when adjusting fades support creating symmetrical fades on both sides of a clip, or locking the duration or shape when modifying an existing fade.

Performance and Professional Features

To round out some of these great new tools, many other fantastic features have been introduced. Mixdowns and bounces are up to 400% faster than our previous release, even when sessions contain lots of third-party effects and automation. When working with video content, enable Timecode overlay on the video panel with options to adjust the display, position, and even the timecode source, on the video panel or to an external monitor. And when sending to an external display, a new preference ensures it remains active even when switching apps or upon relaunching it. Make quick time selections around selected clips with a single keypress, and achieve even more accurate surround panning when targeting a single speaker.
