Pantone Colour of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet
Every year, the colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute pore over research and analyses of design, film, food, fashion, art, and entertainment, as well as materials, travel, sports, and technology, to arrive at a Colour of the Year. It’s a thoughtful and meticulous process, as the decision influences product development, design, and purchasing decisions across multiple industries.
For 2018, Pantone announced PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet as the Colour of the Year.
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
Pantone describes Ultra Violet as a “provocative and thoughtful purple shade” that embodies individuality and spirituality. It alludes to the mysteries of the cosmos and the unknown. It’s an emblem of originality, championed by pop culture icons including Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix. It encourages us to be experimental and inspires us to push our creatives boundaries.
Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute shares, “The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”
The impact of the Pantone Colour of the Year on the creative industry is profound and the announcement is always met with grand anticipation and excitement. Ultra Violet offers a powerful tool to those of us who communicate visually – it provides us with an impactful tone that symbolises and speaks to the mood of the current social and cultural climate, and that addresses a need to think originally, creatively, and with ingenuity.
With more than 100 million visual assets, Adobe Stock offers an amazing resource for creatives to celebrate the Colour of the Year. We’ve partnered with Pantone to curate a gallery of Stock images that captures the essence of Ultra Violet, both in terms of aesthetic cues, as well as its conceptual representations. We can’t wait to see how Ultra Violet inspires the creative community.
