Some of our favourite features and improvements

We’re excited to share with you some really cool updated features and improvements since our debut release of Adobe Dimension 1.0 in October last year.

Adobe Dimension is a new tool for graphic designers to create photo realistic renderings using both 2D and 3D assets. We are starting out by enabling a streamlined workflow for designers to create pre-visualisations of branding or product mockups. Explore our gallery.

Here is one of our favourites so far. It’s a beautiful rendering and design for one of our favourite things — coffee!

We love seeing all the excitement around Dimension, especially around bringing beginner 3D designers into the fold. View our Adobe Live sessions_ with designers using Dimension._

Dimension CC 1.1 features

This year is really about interoperability in addition to a continual focus on performance and usability. Version 1.1 introduces an Edit In workflow for images to Photoshop (don’t worry, Illustrator is coming soon). Dimension fits into your existing toolset, an advantage of working within the Adobe CC ecosystem.

Edit in Photoshop

This workflow is one of the first steps we are taking in leveraging the power of Photoshop (and eventually other Adobe products) while working within Dimension for top quality photo realism. _Edit In _enables you to easily add common image formats, seamlessly edit them in Photoshop, and save changes back in Dimension.

Usability enhancements

Snapping and alignment to the ground

Now you can have the confidence that your 3D object is touching the ground of your scene. Easily move your object to the ground so that the lowest point is touching or as you drag your object around snap bottom, middle, or top point of the object (or group of objects) to the ground.

Snap! Nice and grounded.

Marquee Select

Need I say more? Drag on canvas to easily target groups or discrete objects. There is also a toggle that allows you to only select objects that are completely enclosed by your selection or just touching.

CC Libraries and support for colour application

CC Libraries is a great way to share assets across your devices or teams to ensure consistency. Dimension 1.1 adds support for colour application — so save your colours to libraries and use them as the base colour of your model, background of your scene, or the colour of your lights.

Save coloor palettes to libraries to use them everywhere.

Performance is an important area for us. We’re specifically focusing on file importing, workflow efficiencies, and rendering — both in the interactive canvas and final quality render. To start with, we have some great improvements that result in an average of 30% faster rendering times for certain scenes.

In the spirit of performance improvements, I’d like to dig into share the recent Pfeiffer productivity benchmark report mentioned earlier. The report compares traditional 2D and analogue methods of accomplishing common designer tasks (such as photo-compositing or adapting stock images) to achieving comparable results with Adobe Dimension. The report finds that designers can produce photo realistic brand visualisations and product mockups much more quickly and efficiently with Adobe Dimension.

The report also states that by incorporating 3D workflows within Adobe Dimension to accomplish these tasks, designers can not only create on average five times faster, but also achieve high-quality photo realistic images more quickly and with more flexibility to change and edit aspects of the design along the way. Read the full report here.

3D models are made with UVs, which are essentially a guide to tell your design application how and where to display the material or image that you are applying. UVs can get very complicated, even for advanced 3D modelers, and our research shows that the majority of models available online either don’t have UVs or their existing UVs contain errors. All of this means that when you apply a material, things just won’t look right.

Using an advanced algorithm powered by Adobe Sensei, Adobe Dimension will automatically create UVs or offer to fix detected errors in existing UVs so that you can get to adding materials and decals immediately.

Community and feedback

We lean heavily on what we hear from you and there are many ways to provide feedback. The easiest way is directly in the Dimension application via the Feedback panel.

Here you can post new ideas, vote on and see the status of existing features and report issues. You can also visit the Dimension feedback site outside of the app if you have an idea to share. We read every comment and really want to work with you as we build out this amazing application. Thank you to all who have already provided feedback — keep it coming!

We have also conducted over hundreds of hours of interviews focusing on a variety of design areas. If you are interested in participating in any research, please join the Dimension feedback site and fill out our survey. You can also join the Dimension Prerelease program to get early access to new features and provide in-depth feedback.

More Resources

Our team is working furiously to provide you with awesome new capabilities in Dimension. But we are equally dedicated to learning all we can to help you when you need more information. Please check out any of these resources, and know that more are coming to help you take full advantage of all that Dimension has to offer.

Thank you for reading about the new Adobe Dimension 1.1 release. We’re looking forward to your feedback. If you haven’t checked out Adobe Dimension yet, now is a great time to get started. Until next time, happy rendering!
