Adobe Celebrates Creativity for All at Sundance Film Festival

The majority of films at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival were cut with Premiere Pro CC.

It’s time for our annual pilgrimage to the mountains of Park City, Utah for the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and we couldn’t be more excited as we head into this year’s events. As a major partner for more than 10 years, Adobe is proud to be a part of this important storytelling moment that celebrates and empowers such a diverse set of filmmakers. Year after year, we’re inspired by the bold films at Sundance, and we cannot wait to see their stories and voices come to life on the big screen.

As more and more Hollywood feature films and television shows are choosing Adobe Premiere Pro, so too is the independent film world. This year, 52% of the Festival’s films based on an official survey were cut with Adobe Premiere Pro, making it the most used primary editing tool at Sundance. What’s more, nearly half of the New Frontier virtual reality projects (48.6%) chose Premiere Pro to create new immersive storytelling experiences, and overall, 75% of the 2019 Festival lineup used Adobe Creative Cloud technology to bring their stories to the screen.

Over the past five years, we’ve seen the use of Premiere Pro increase nearly 400%, becoming the preferred editing tool for filmmakers behind some of the most buzzworthy festival films. Five 2018 Sundance documentaries that were edited with Premiere Pro are now on the 2019 Oscar shortlist, and we’re excited to see what’s to come with highly-anticipated films like Clemency, Native Son, Last Black Man in San Francisco, Animals, Hail Satan?, and Knock Down the House turning to Premiere Pro to execute their vision.

And that’s not all. For Adobe, it’s just as important to celebrate the filmmakers of the festival as it is to empower those with big ideas brewing to make their creative visions a reality. We’re continuing to empower the next generation of creators with tools and mentorship through the Sundance Ignite program, which has four alumni debuting projects in the festival this year—Matthew Puccini and Tyler Rabinowitz (Lavender), Crystal Kayiza (Edgecombe), and Vasilis Kekatos (The Silence of the Dying Fish). Tune into Adobe’s Instagram Stories throughout the week to see several Ignite Fellows and Alumni take over and share their Sundance experiences. We’re also continuing our efforts with the Sundance Momentum Fellowship, a full-year program providing creative and professional support to artists from underrepresented communities to help them to the next level of their career.
