Whether you’re a design professional, a solopreneur looking to build your brand, a business leader, or just someone looking for some inspiration, creativity is likely a core element in your work.

At this year’s Adobe MAX, we not only talked about creativity today but explored the future of creativity; with artists and experts across various mediums and industries.

New Zealand Emmy award-winning choreographer and founder of The Palace Dance Studio, Parris Goebel, joined the line-up of creative thought leaders and changemakers to share what inspires and drives her source of power when creating.

Standing out instead of fitting in

One of the biggest roadblocks to creativity is fear, whether that be fear of making a mistake or fear of what others think. Making and following your own rules is a way to find the confidence to pursue ideas that are authentic to your true self.

“As a creative, you want to stand out, not fit in. Any rule you can break, break it. Any time you can, go the opposite way,” says Parris.

For Parris, creativity is all about pushing boundaries and looking beyond the latest trends.

“Whatever’s cool, do something uncool, because that will be cool. That will be the future.”

Keeping things physical in a digital world

The pandemic brought a lot of changes to creativity and the creative industry, including how artists share their work with others. When many creators had to move their work into the digital sphere, those who previously relied on in-person experiences had to adapt.

“I think it pushes me to be more intentional, to make sure that no matter whether they’re watching it in person or through their phone, they feel the feelings I want them to feel,” says Parris.
