Adobe and NBCUniversal News Group empower next generation of students with digital media and literacy skills
Earlier this year, NBCUniversal News Group’s education initiative NBCU Academy and Adobe launched a pilot of “The Edit”, a first-of-its-kind program in the United States aimed at helping middle and high school students build key digital media and literacy skills. NBCU Academy is part of Project UP, Comcast NBCUniversal’s comprehensive initiative to expand access to the tools newsrooms use day in and day out, and to inspire the next generation of leaders in news and journalism.
Today at the ISTELive 24 conference, we announced the winners of the competition.
Together, Adobe and NBCU Academy developed thoughtfully structured, classroom-ready lessons and resources for “The Edit”, including tutorials and guides on how to script, record, publish and use Adobe Express, the all-in-one, AI content creation app. Teachers worked with their students to leverage these tools to create 90-second videos news reports related to wellness.
“The Edit is about empowering the next generation of storytellers and media professionals,” said Yvette Miley, EVP of diversity, equity and inclusion for NBCUniversal News Group. “We aim to inspire students to explore their creativity while learning valuable and transferable skills to build their understanding of media.”
“We’re excited to support students in learning the creative and digital skills that will empower them to become next generation creators and storytellers,” said Mala Sharma, general manager and vice president, creators and Digital Media Education, Adobe.
Teachers who participated expressed enthusiasm for how the program impacted their students:
“The templates were amazing, and the b-roll was great! ... There is nothing that Adobe or NBC could do to make this project easier to follow beyond doing it for us.”
-STEAM Teacher, Cincinnati PS
“I love that they had to work as teams... And it was great for language acquisition and verbal skills, as they had to learn how to be specific and direct, as well as sensitive in their framing... They learned how to find their own strengths and showcase leadership skills.”
- Career and Technical Education Teacher, Cincinnati Public Schools
“We have to teach kids how to be creators of good media, not just passive consumers of content. The Edit gives them the structure they need to learn this skill, so they don’t feel they’re floundering. We need more opportunities like this.”
- School Librarian, Yearbook & GSA Advisor, Baltimore Public Schools
