Done deal: Women are owning their place in tech sales

While innovation is at the core of everything we do, at Adobe, we understand that our employees are our greatest assets. We run programs to support returning women professionals and much, much more.

Getting started in tech sales

Evelyn Johnston, Solution-Led Sales based in New Zealand, entered the world of tech sales ten years ago, embarking on a journey that has been both challenging and rewarding.

“When I started, I was the only woman on our team of eight salespeople. Over time, I've had the privilege of working with several amazing women who support and lift each other in their careers. Interestingly, some of the most successful and accomplished salespeople at Adobe are women,” Johnston says.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

When Kayley Brown began in the tech sales industry, she too found herself to be the only woman on the team, but that didn’t discourage her. “It turned out to be a formative period for me, as it allowed me to embrace my unique perspective and build unwavering self-confidence,” Brown reveals.

Subsequently, Brown joined Adobe as an Inside Sales Representative in Australia, and her previous work experience influenced her willingness to promote equality and diversity in the workplace.

However, the task of securing a seat at the table and ensuring that your voice is heard isn’t solely a woman’s responsibility. Companies must ensure ongoing support for their female employees.

How Adobe empowers its female employees

One of our core values, “Be Genuine,” underscores the company’s focus on ensuring that employees feel comfortable in being their authentic selves.

This commitment to an inclusive environment extends to hiring and promotions as well, with Employee Experience leaders actively pursuing gender parity to ensure women have equal opportunities to rise to leadership positions.

While speaking about such change is vital, it is equally important that concrete and visible action is taken as well.

Adobe runs several women-led internal groups, including the Women at Adobe employee network. We also encourage participation in external groups such as Women In Tech and Women Who Code. This approach allows our female employees to draw inspiration from other professionals in the industry.

From short courses and workshops through to mentorship programmes and annual events, the Adobe Learning and Development team remains consistently engaged throughout the year. Their commitment ensures that women feel empowered and have access to all the tools they need to succeed.

Among all of these various benefits, Brown’s favourite is Adobe’s professional development fund. This fund enables employees to cultivate skills in any direction they choose.

“I have attended talks delivered by professional leaders, enrolled in short courses for self-improvement or to improve my understanding of the economy, and I will soon be completing a public speaking boot camp,” Brown shares.

Paving the way forward

To step into the world of tech sales or to advance your career in this industry requires a solid path forward. The key is to build and maintain a robust support network.

Genuinely celebrating women and giving them the tools to succeed is often the foundation. However, it is critically important to be enveloped by a supportive community and to be able to draw on inspiration from fellow professionals in the field.

“I've been so privileged to work with several phenomenal women who provide mutual support and uplift each other,” Johnston says.

In early 2023, E Johnston had the chance to spearhead a new market. She acknowledged that this was completely achievable with the backing and support of her colleagues.

Brown’s experience mirrors this sentiment.

“Whenever a challenge arises, there is always someone within the business who is ready to provide guidance or assistance. When there is a difficult situation faced with a customer, my team and I will debrief and discuss the path that can provide the best outcome or resolution,” Brown explains.

The support for women is a constant and reassuring presence here, whether this is facilitated through groups, events or activities. This means being surrounded by colleagues and leaders who care and who are willing to provide a helping hand.
