Generative AI has ushered in a new era of creativity, igniting a spark of innovation that knows no bounds and empowering people to think beyond industry norms.

For architect and photographer Victor Au-Yeung, day to day work involves quite a lot of rigour, and creativity can be restricted through the physical parameters of his industry.

We sat down with Victor to hear how generative AI is freeing creators to think beyond the rules and regulations of industries.

Breaking boundaries in architectural creativity

In the dynamic field of architectural design, generative AI is emerging as a transformative tool helping architects reimagine spaces with unprecedented efficiency.

Unlike disciplines where designs are observed, architecture demands that the structures not only be seen but also inhabited and experienced. This imposes a unique set of physical parameters where creativity must be balanced with functionality. With generative AI, architects can iteratively test design changes based on a scene with text prompts, whilst considering the rules and regulations of the industry in the real world, says Victor.

Quote from Victor Au: “Generative Ai is a tool that is continuously inspiring … it triggers interesting changes that you didn’t expect. I find that really powerful.”

It is both a time-saving ally that streamlines the path from concept to reality, and a tool to assist architects in quickly envisaging designs and possibilities previously unexplored.

The permission to “think big”

Generative AI is emerging as a trusted co-pilot that enhances workflows and unlocks new dimensions of inspiration.

After using generative AI in his work for the first time recently, Victor sees it as the latest tool helping creators to articulate ideas and source inspiration. But it is still an individual’s creativity and experiences that makes a project or design unique.

Quote from Victor: “I don’t see generative AI replacing critical thinking, which is what we do. To the capacity that I’ve used it, it’s still very much aiding me, rather than replacing.”

While it won’t replace human ingenuity, generative AI is still inspiring all creatives to “think bigger and have fun,” says Victor.

According to Victor, it’s the rapid generation and iteration enabled by generative AI that provides architects with a process of continuous inspiration and testing, allowing them to refine concepts and arrive at the most appropriate and pleasing solutions.

Reimagining cityscapes with generative AI

Driven to revolutionise and reshape the world through his creativity, Victor joined our Takeover Tomorrow campaign along with Heidi and Elena to propel positive change.

With the help of generative AI, and his background in architecture and photography, Victor created a piece of work that reimagined Sydney Town Hall into a space that could be further publicly celebrated.

Using generative AI in Adobe Photoshop, Victor created a ‘what if’ future, where Sydney Town Hall was transformed, continuing the concept of public spaces by adding a series of democratised forums and gallery spaces above the existing building.

“You can afford to have a bit of fun with the tools,” says Victor, who used Generative Fill to have fun and experiment with layers upon layers of inspiration.

Victor’s alternative dimension brings a new life to Sydney Town Hall that might not be the way the future goes but is one of many possibilities.
