Partnering to bring customers choice in AI models

Many creators are still in the process of understanding generative AI, assessing what it means for their work and figuring out how to harness it in ways that work best for them. They are experimenting with different models for different projects at different stages of their creative process — especially the creative concepting or “ideation” phase. And they tell us they’d like the choice to experiment with many models and aesthetic variations in this phase, directly in the creative workflows they’re using.

We believe that creators are in the best position to determine the tools they need to bring their creative vision to life. So today, we’re announcing that in addition to our commercially safe and IP-friendly Adobe Firefly models, we’ll provide creators the choice to use non-Adobe creative generative AI models, directly in the Adobe ecosystem, as part of their ideation process. We’re starting with models from Black Forest Labs (Flux 1.1 Pro), fal (upscalers), Google Cloud (Veo 2, Imagen 3) and Runway (Runway Frames) — which creators tell us they’re already using to experiment with different aesthetic styles — and will add additional models soon.

We’ll start making these models available in Project Concept and Adobe Express in the weeks ahead. For those who opt in to using these models, it will be seamless to switch between Firefly models that are IP-friendly for production use and non-Adobe models that offer different aesthetic styles for ideation. We’ll give creators the choice of when they use creative generative AI in their workflows, and we’ll always be transparent about which model they’re using.

More flexibility and choice

Our goal is to ensure that creators have control over which creative models they use when, and for which project — and to put this choice directly in the tools they rely on. At the same time, we’ll continue to provide them the confidence to deliver final production assets with Adobe Firefly’s commercially safe models. Enterprise customers will have the option to enable non-Adobe models at the enterprise level if their organization wants creative teams to be able to use these models along with Firefly’s commercially safe options.

“Each AI model generates images in completely unique ways. Having choices means you can select what works best for you. It's nice to not be limited in your creative explorations but also be able to use Adobe Firefly as a commercially safe option for production.”

– Markus Madlangbayan, video pro and a VFX artist

Regardless of which model creators choose to use in Adobe products, the content they generate and upload in our apps will never be used to train generative AI models. This has always been the case for Adobe Firefly models and it’s a requirement in all our partnership agreements.

In addition, Content Credentials — a “nutrition label” for digital content that provides information on how it was created and modified — will be attached to AI-generated content in our products to indicate whether it was created with Firefly or a non-Adobe creative model, helping creators make informed decisions about how to use the content.

As we continue to innovate on our comprehensive family of Adobe Firefly models — which span image, vector, design and video and have been used to generate more than 20 billion assets to date — we're excited to release new improvements to our Firefly Image Model in the weeks ahead.

Adobe’s creator-friendly approach

The approach we’re taking to building our own Firefly models is the most creator-friendly in the industry — and that commitment does not change. Firefly’s generative AI models are only trained on content we have permission to use; offer professional-grade creative controls and produce high quality, production-ready content safe for commercial use. Additionally, we have provided bonus payments to Adobe Stock contributors whose work was used in training Firefly and we founded the Content Authenticity Initiative to help foster a more transparent digital ecosystem.

As we continue to innovate across the Adobe ecosystem, we’re listening to, learning from and partnering with the creative community. In the weeks and months to come, we’ll introduce additional features, models and tools that put more control, collaborative ability, power, precision — and choice — in their hands.
