Firefly at one: Enhancing experimentation, ideation, and exploration for creators of all levels

Image of a "1" created using Adobe Firefly.

Exactly one year ago today we launched Adobe Firefly — our family of creative generative AI models designed to be safe for commercial use and built with creators in mind. Generative AI is transforming our world, and it’s difficult to believe it’s only been 12 months.

As we mark this milestone, we want to take the opportunity to revisit Firefly’s incredible journey over the last year and celebrate what we have achieved, with the amazing support of the global creative community.

Year One, Happy birthday Firefly with a cupcake.

Firefly’s key milestones so far

We’re designing generative AI with a customer-centric approach, supporting creators to work faster and more efficiently. Since its introduction in March 2023, we therefore have been rolling out Firefly to the apps you know and love, so you can take full advantage of the power of generative AI within your existing workflows. Firefly is now natively integrated in the following Creative Cloud apps:

Users around the world are leveraging Firefly as a partner to dream up new ways to be creative, differentiate their work, and build their businesses.

All of this happened over the course of just one year. We’re innovating quickly to revolutionize the future of creative ideation and change the way creatives like you think about using AI as a partner in their workflows.

Reducing harm and bias in generative AI

Adobe is committed to developing generative AI responsibly, with creators at the center. That's why our Firefly generative AI models were trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, and public domain content where copyright has expired. We also rigorously and continuously test all of our AI-powered features and products against our AI Ethics principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency to mitigate against harmful biases and stereotypes. This includes automated testing and human evaluation such as adversarial testing.

The Content Authenticity Initiative, meanwhile, has surged past 2,500 members, and Content Credentials, an industry leader for establishing trust in the digital ecosystem, are automatically attached to Firefly outputs to indicate that generative AI was used. Content Credentials are rolling out broadly across the Internet and gaining significant adoption momentum — with both software and hardware devices.

We also provide feedback mechanisms for our community to enable you to report potentially biased outputs. If you have a question about AI ethics or want to report a possible AI ethics issue, please contact us.

Happy birthday, Firefly. Let’s continue to innovate together

Our community is crucial in helping us build Firefly. Join the conversation via Discord or the Adobe Firefly Community forum and use these channels to give and get feedback, exchange ideas, and share your own creations. Make sure to also check out the new Firefly community gallery to find inspiration, remix images, and submit your outputs, too.

After one year we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible with generative AI, but adoption of this revolutionary new technology is already growing at an unprecedented rate: 83 percent of creative professionals are now using generative AI tools in their work, and 74 percent are using them in their personal lives as well. (For more stats, see our recent global survey about the use of generative AI).

And the innovation continues with exciting new features like Structure Reference, which provide more creative control as users experiment and ideate. Together we’re learning to use Firefly as a partner to unlock its unlimited possibilities and dream bigger. We can’t wait to see what the next year holds for creating with Firefly!
